How to Quickly Update Summer Outfits for Women Over 40
Oddly enough, I always feel my frumpiest mom self in the summer. In the winter, you can throw on skinny jeans, a turtleneck tunic, and knee high boots and you feel like a supermodel. In the summer, it's t-shirts, shorts, sneakers or flip flops. That can look cute (or, at least like you've made an effort) if it's done right.
Determined to have some cute summer outfits that I don't have to think about, I made a few simple changes to my typical summer mom uniform and I feel so fresh and hip now!
And yes, I am 43 and I still want to look "cute". Maybe "presentable" is a more appropriate term? I want to look like I made effortless effort :)

4 Simple Updates to Your Summer Uniform!
1. Scarf as a Belt
You can use these scarves as a belt or a headband! Add one to your usual summer shorts and pop on one of your normal t-shirts with the half tuck and boom, you're looking stylish and cute (and staying cool!).
This look would look great with a comfy pair of white sneakers, too.
Both of these scarves are from Target from the "A New Day" line and they are so versatile!
You can use them as a belt, a headband, or just as a regular ol' scarf around your neck. They are made of a super thin material, so they can be warn in the heat of summer.
2. Slouchy Distressed Denim Shorts
Update your shorts to something more stylish, yet equally as comfy as your ol' tried and true summer walking shorts. Add a pair of loose linen drawstring shorts or try a pair of slouchy/baggy distressed denim shorts to stay comfy yet stylish.
Size up and wear a belt/scarf and you won't believe how much happier, more stylish, and skinnier you feel.
Yep, going up a size will definitely make your legs not only look thinner, but you'll feel like, whoah! I must've lost weight because these shorts are huge on me! Your mental state is half the battle, amIright?
I really like this pair from Loft because they aren't super-distressed. I'm 43, people. Some women in their 40's might be able to pull off the super distressed look, but I feel like I'm trying too hard.
They are $54, but I got them for 50% off and they're having the same sale right now! I might grab a second pair....remember to size up one or two sizes.
And these look like booty-shorts in the photo, but I can assure you, they're not. And honestly? It's HOT and I want to stay cool. Are my legs smooth and perfect? Heck no! But I'm tired of hiding myself for other people. I have cellulite. Deal with it.
Also, the key to not feeling like you're wearing booty shorts is sizing up one or two sizes and then using a belt (or scarf!) to hold them up. That said, if they were an inch or two longer, I wouldn't be mad about it LOL.
Side note: the inside cuff of these shorts keeps unfolding...I will be ironing/starching it down after I wash them! Otherwise, I plan to live in these shorts all summer. (UPDATE: I unfolded these since they are not stitched and added two inches to the length of these shorts! WIN)
Side note Part 2: Joe took these photos for me and while I felt ridiculous, and most of them ended up on the cutting room floor, I'm glad we did it. And I got a nice new profile photo out of it. I set the camera settings using Joe as my model--I'll have to post his shots on social media because they're pretty funny.
3. Stylish Yet Comfy Sandals
I have cute shoes and to wear in warm weather, but beyond wearing them on a date night, they aren't practical!
I'm either cleaning the house, running errands, driving the kids somewhere, or going for walks with the kids. And I'm not going to wear my stacked wedge heals while doing any of those things.
I have a pair of Tevas that I LOVE. They are more utilitarian than stylish, but they are the cutest Teva style I've tried and liked. Mine are over three years old and they and I'd love to update them because they are looking pretty beat down. And now I can't find what I want anywhere.
So I was determined to find another pair of sandals that would be equally as comfortable as they are stylish to wear in the heat of summer.
I see lots of cute sandals that women sport in the summer, but they have no support! I don't get it. Are these women suffering for their style and soaking their feet every night? Or getting a back massage from their husbands?
This over 40-year-old's back needs support!
I found the perfect combination at The Walking Company. In fact, I found TWO pair of supportive, yet cute, sandals, so I bought both! They weren't cheap, but I don't spend a lot on shoes, normally and I know I'll get a lot of use from them.
I bought the beautiful dark brown--a great neutral for summer. And the deep red pair is also a great neutral.
I've been wearing them with shorts, dresses, jeans, you name it!
4. Dressy/Flowy Top
I am a t-shirt addict. In the past year, I've had to have a talk with myself before entering any store and remind myself: NO grey or black t-shirts. If I bought it, it had to have some personality or femininity to it in order for me to add it to my closet.
A t-shirt, jeans, and cardigan with possibly a necklace is my usual mom uniform. And that's when I make an effort. But I never felt particularly cute. It's a safe choice.
But I added three new flowy and feminine tops to my summer mom uniform and what a huge difference they are making!
Especially when I pair them with my distressed denim cutoff jean shorts! Add in the sandals and holy cow...I start thinking, am I over dressed? HAHA! Now that's funny.
Beyond the sandals, these updates were easy and affordable. The scarves were under $15 at Target, the shorts were $28 from Loft (on sale) and the Top was $25 at Charming Charlie! YES, Charming Charlie. Who knew??
I hope this has inspired you to make a few tweaks to your summer outfits. I know I have a little extra pep in my step when I'm wearing these new outfits which sets the tone for the entire day.
It's true what they say: when you look good, you feel good :)
