When Rachel first contacted me about doing a newborn lifestyle photo shoot, she was on the fence about adding on a maternity photo shoot since she was already pretty far along in her pregnancy. Maternity photo shoots are typically done between 34 and 37 weeks. You know, before you start feeling like a bloated refrigerator?
But after some thought, she decided to go for it and I’m so glad she did! Their family of three will never be the same after #2 makes her appearance and these photos will be something the entire family will be able to cherish and will help them remember what life was like before they were a family of four.
The plan was for Rachel and Andy to make breakfast with Elsa, their 2-year-old, but otherwise we would just go with the flow. When I texted Rachel to let her know I was on the way, she wrote back and informed me that the breakfast idea was out. Andy was getting their favorite donuts and they may or may not make pancakes. She was tired and not down for a whole song and dance, you know? I wrote back: “Reality. That’s my favorite genre.” It was a match made in heaven LOL
When I arrived, Elsa was getting her nails done by her favorite nail tech, her mom. Pretty serious business.
Andy brought LaMar’s Donuts—I didn’t know they had other locations besides the one I’ve been to in Denver (sidenote: they have 10 locations in Colorado). And I think they may have been there a time or two before :)
And then they decided to go ahead and make some Mickey Mouse pancakes...more serious business. I love images like this where you truly get a glimpse of what their lives are like before they expand their brood. Moments like these will be hard to remember as each year passes and that's why I love this approach to family portraits!
The vibe in Rachel and Andy’s home is so CHILL. Their lives are about to be turned upside down and they are totally aware and ready for what comes. Elsa is a confident and passionate girl and each parent seemed to have their own special bond with her. Transitioning to the big sister role is going to be a piece of cake with that kind of support.
They were definitely giving me squad goals. And the kids’ rooms are so adorable and thoughtful…Elsa and baby #2 are lucky girls!
I can’t wait to come back and shoot their newborn lifestyle photo session. But for now, I’ll keep enjoying the photos from this totally sweet Highland’s Ranch squad of three.
